Norwich Theatre, Theatre Street, Norwich, NR2 1R

Natalie Byrne, People & Culture Manager

Student W, Alumnus 2023

Role: General Assistant, front & back of house.

‘2023 marked the first year that Norwich Theatre resumed a work experience programme after the pandemic, this was a learning exercise for all of our staff as we had a vast amount of new staff and we were taking a slightly different approach to the delivery of work experience.

We encouraged all the applicants to send us a CV alongside an expression of interest and all students undertook an interview that was supported by school staff members.

We were glad to be contacted by the Wherry School to enquire as to the availability of a work experience place and following a successful application process and interview, we were happy to offer one of their students a placement spanning a few days.

The Wherry school were really clear on their communications with us and we forged a good working relationship with key staff at the school.

It was great to be able to provide a supportive environment to their student by working together to create a more bespoke programme of work that was enriching and aligned with that student's peer group.

We feel that the student went away with a greater understanding of not just the Theatre but of the working world and feel proud of the work they completed whilst they were with us. ‘

“H was a very enthusiastic and engaged presence when he did his work experience here. He was always helpful and willing and followed tasks really well, displaying a good sense of humour and a desire to get on with everyone. Throughout his time here we saw him grow in confidence and independence and we hope it was as rewarding for him as it was for us!”
